Fade to 1906
California Academy of Sciences,
San Francisco
2018
A digital exhibit interactive and artist collaboration as part of the Giants of Land and Sea exhibit. Visitors can explore the work of artist Shawn Clover who collaged images of the same location in SF from 2010 and 1906 (right after the historic earthquake).
On one installed touchscreen, included in a wall graphic about earthquakes in California and ways to prepare for the next earthquake. This interactive focused on images that collage photos from 1906 and contemporary photos taken from the same location in 2010. The interface includes a map and location information to orient these photos in San Francisco. Simple swipe/click interaction to navigate through the series.

As an attract screen, images pop up from the location of where they were photographed. Used to draw the visitor in and describe what the exhibit interactive element is about.
Satellite map shows all the locations photographed. Used as a time out image before the attract screen loads.
Each collage has a description of what was being captured on that block in 1906. A map gives the artworks context.
The ways the artist merged elements of historical San Francisco illustrates how devastating earthquakes can be. The panel above this touchscreen discusses earthquake preparedness and about the earthquakes and the Academy during the big California earthquakes.
