Digital Cruise Ship App

App designed at MATTER,
San Francisco

2016

Digital app suite for cruise ships (staff and guest apps) delivers a huge number of features including a virtual concierge for the trip, multi-media entertainment, and ways to personalize the trip. The team designed a complex design system of animations, graphic elements, and UI.

All around the ship are wall sized touchscreens that guests activate with their wearable medallion. All of the same functionality is available as on mobile devices and stateroom TVs. The design system includes staff tablet/mobile apps to accommodate guests.

Part of the onboarding userflow, creating a grouped experience with other guests, both for arrival information, meals, and excursions.

A major element of the design was responsive animated elements that “dive” deep into the ocean with exploratory content of activities to participate in. Left/Right scroll acted as a timeline personalized with all scheduled activities.

Portal Large-format screens

On the timeline view of a trip, the background (sky, sea, land) change with the location and time of day.

Since every guest has a medallion, they are able to use any screen around the ship tailored to their needs.
